The silence of light
A Harley's distant thunder.
Traffic an erratic bass line.
Pop and sizzle of unseen firecrackers.
First screams announcing the locusts.
Thud of the neighbor's car door.
Lazy ballgame on TV.
My clicking keys.
A jet overhead, slanting south, about to land.
Screen door hissing shut.
Evening's goodbye breeze rustling the oak trees
And snapping the flag.
Unwelcome whine of a mosquito.
The long, low moan of a train,
The rumble that follows.
And the silence of the light:
The sunset, the candle, the fireflies.
