A recent outbreak of the norovirus around northern Saskatchewan has prompted some hospitals to take preventative and cautionary measures.

Both the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon and the Battleford Hospital in North Battleford have had to close all or in part to the public within the last week.

It was discovered early last week that the virus infecting people in Saskatoon was the norovirus, commonly referred to as Norwalk.

According to Linda Lewis, Communications Officer with the Prairie North Health Region, on January 24 it was discovered that the cases in North Battleford are also Norwalk.

“Since last Friday, there have been 14 people, many patients but also some staff, suffering from gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.”
