News-Sentinel | 12/13/2006 | Retail center planned at Illinois, Thomas roads: "Retail center planned at Illinois, Thomas roads
By Ryan Lengerich

"A 300,000-square-foot shopping center is planned for the land catty-corner to Jefferson Pointe on Illinois Road.

"Pine Tree Commercial Realty in Lake Bluff, Ill., wants to develop 32 acres along Illinois between Thomas Road and Lagro Drive. Rich Evans, senior vice president of development, said Gateway Crossing will feature a big-box anchor, restaurants and midsize and small stores.

"The company is expected to file paperwork with the city today, including a request to rezone the land, so the project can be considered at the Jan. 22 meeting of the Fort Wayne Plan Commission.

"Evans said construction could begin in the spring with plans for a mid-2008 opening.

"Evans did not disclose what tenants would occupy the complex, though Pine Tree Commercial lists more than 80 retailers on its Web site with which it does business. Target, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Kohl’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Menards, Lowe’s, Home Depot and Toys “R” Us are among the largest.

"Evans said the company has contracts to purchase 12 existing properties to make way for the development. Those include Sylvan Learning Center, Westridge Baptist Church and several homes, he said."

First, let me say, how much I hate the local papers web site(s). They are just terrible. It's hard to find stuff, it's badly organized, and it doesn't look too good either.

Second, I am NOT getting excited over the possibility that Target MIGHT actually be a candidate as the "big-box" store for this site! After all the years of rumors, hoping, and sending emails begging Target for a southwest Fort Wayne store (not only by Aboite people, but my friends in Roanoke and Huntington, too). Just our'll be another WALMART . Even though there's already one RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET!
