In real life, unlike in Shakespeare, the sweetness of the rose depends upon the name it bears. Things are not only what they are. They are, in very important respects, what they seem to be. -- Hubert H. Humphrey.

I try to tell people this all the time, but most don't seem to understand. SEEMING can be just as, sometimes even more, important, than BEING. It's why people do the things they do--they are acting on what SEEMS to be true; not the real true.
